Binning Images and Calibration Frames

edited March 2023 in PixInsight
I was recently imaging in HaLRGB with the intention of binning my asi1600mm 2x2 to improve image scale. Due to excitement caused some unusually clear nights, I ended up shooting the Red & Green filters at 1x1, with everything else at 2x2. Realizing the error, I shot flats/drkflats and darks for R & G also at 1x1.
My question is whether I should calibrate the images at 1x1 and then use IntegerResample to bin the resulting files, or resample the lights and calibration frames to 2x2 and then calibrate.
Not sure it would make a difference, and calibrating at 1x1 would obviously be easier.
Thanks for reading, and any response would be greatly appreciated!!

  • Yes, it does make a difference. You will want to calibrate your 1x1 data and then integer resample.
The reason is because you cannot resample dark frames (you can do this for calibrated flat field images though).
Dark frames record an electronic signature/behavior that isn't based on incident light- so resampling the image truly messes with the information.

  • Thanks for the response Adam! Didn't realize the darks wouldn't resample well but I'm left with the easier option.
Really enjoying all of your content...keep up the great work!!

  • Pleasantly surprised when I did a search for "Image Container" in Fundamentals and the example video was using IntegerResample to batch process some unbinned files!!!
